Back in February, we told you about how a toy company was planning on releasing an official recreation of the Back To The Future hoverboard sometime in 2012. And, while they certainly stretched the meaning of “sometime in 2012″ and took nearly the entire year to do it, that company just announced that they haven’t forgotten about anyone who pre-ordered the hoverboard back in March—or anyone who still wants to order one. As a result, they just announced that they will begin accepting orders for the limited-edition hoverboard immediately and shipping them out later this month.
Now, if you already got in on the pre-ordering process back when the BTTF hoverboard was announced in February, then you’re in luck. You’ll be receiving your hoverboard sometime soon, as the initial shipment of the hoverboards started on December 3. But, if you’re just getting around to ordering one now, you should know that, for $130, you will be getting an exact prop replica of the BTTF hoverboard created by the film’s original special effects supervisor Michael Lantieri. It’s a 1:1 scale model of the hoverboard that is approximately 28″ x 8″ x 3″ in size and looks and feels exactly like the one used inBTTF. Unfortunately, it won’t fly like that one did (duh). But, it will make the cool “whooshing” sound that the original one did and it’ll be decorated exactly how you remember it.
If you’re looking to scoop one of these up for Christmas, you’re probably going to have a little bit of trouble. For whatever reason, the second shipment of these hoverboards will not go out until December 20, which means you might not get it in time for the holidays. But, if you’re a fan of BTTF or know someone who is, this would make for a great late Christmas gift. You can order one over here right now. But, remember: These things aren’t going to last forever. So, scoop yours up now before it’s too late.
