Cotton prices hit another record earlier today.

As noted by the San Francisco Chronicle:

Cotton futures in New York jumped to a record, gaining by the daily limit for a third day, on signs that growers may struggle to meet mounting demand from China, the world’s biggest consumer.

Cotton for March delivery gained 2.7 percent to $1.5412 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York at 4:15 p.m. Tokyo time. Prices have more than doubled this year, heading for the biggest annual gain since 1973.

Output in China’s Shandong province, the nation’s second-biggest producer, dropped 22 percent this year from 2009 after natural disasters hurt crops, the region’s Agriculture Information Center said in a report Dec. 17. Demand in China is forecast to exceed supply by 17 million bales in the year ending July 31, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

What’s behind this move? Well, judging by everything I’ve read so far, it sounds like good old-fashioned demand (up) and supply (down).

But just to be sure, I decided to check in with two famous economic commentators. I tracked down the talking “bunnies” over on YouTube (ht SK) and, sure enough, they agree that supply and demand fundamentals are what’s driving the cotton market.*

Unfortunately, the critters have a much more serious tone than in their famous explanation of QE2 (except for some gratuitous language at the very end, which tries to pay homage to their earlier work). But they do speak with authority.

In other words expect prices to go up for 2011!!!

Five Four Factory Presents: Larry King Live

December 13, 2010 By Andres Izquieta 0 Comments

On Wednesday we had the pleasure of being invited down to the Larry King Live studios at CNN.

I've been a huge fan of Larry King for many years, an avid watcher of his show, and a fan

of his interview style, and in general 'what he does' and 'how he does it'. I've always been intrigued with his show, as he gets to sit down with people from all walks of life, that are relevant in politics, business and pop culture, and asks them questions from how they started, to what motivates them, to information about their current projects/scandals/whatever, and so forth. I definitely classify Larry as one of my heroes. I'm very sad that next week is the last week of the Larry King Live show, there are some big shoes to fill at CNN.

People always ask me who inspires me, and who I admire, and who I'm star struck by. The people who are my heroes and real celebrities to me are business leaders, innovators, thinkers, and media icons. It was such an honor for me to finally get to meet Larry King, and knowing that he wears Five Four is the most amazing feeling.

We were given insane access to come check out the offices, and set of the show. Check it out below.

As soon as I walk in to Larry's offices, I'm greeted by Mr. King himself on the couch. He preps here in one of his producer's offices, watches the news and sees what's going on in the world.

Five Four Factory Presents Larry King Live

Larry's closet of his famous ties and braces (Larry was telling me how suspenders are called braces). So I asked Larry when he started wearing suspenders. At first, he corrected me about calling them braces vs. suspenders. Second, he told me that many years back he was walking with his ex-wife in Beverly Hills, and they walked by a store that had braces. She suggested to him that he wear them, as he had never wore that type of item before, and has been wearing them ever since! The only times he hasn't wore them when wearing a shirt and tie, is Ronald Reagan's funeral, and Yitzhak Rabin's funeral.

Brand Alert: Radii

Jay-Z rocks Radii

Although Radii (pronounced “ray-dee-eye”) was only launched in 2008, the footwear brand has already received much notable love.

Jay-Z has been spotted all over the U.S. rocking his 420 Tops by Radii. The brand didn’t even hook him up, apparently he copped them himself!

jay-z_1

A great way for a sneaker brand to start off, isn’t it?

Radii began in Souther California and prides itself on innovative, futuristic designs that “reflect each individual’s unique personality from the feet up”.

Founder Casey Arisohn was previously a buyer for the action sports stores Beach Bums in Cali.

While at Beach Bums, he noticed that his suggestions to the design team were often put in place and ended up resulting in top selling items. This naturally sparked Casey’s decision to get into the production side of things.

Radii debuted at the semi-annual MAGIC trade show in August 2008 and received instant praise.

Even with the creative use of materials like satin patent and action leather, as well as fresh details like buckles, buttons and more, these kicks still maintain reasonable price – only $95-$120 on DrJays.com right now!

Taboo from Black Eyed Peas stays in Radii!

Who Has The Best Sneaker Game?

If you could raid any hip hop artist’s sneaker collection, whose would it be?

Would it be Jay-Z, who mixes it up with new brands like Radii, and classic Nike?

Perhaps it’s Chris Brown, who favors a skater steez with Supra, Vans, and lots of vibrant Nike kicks.

How about the colorful Lil Wayne, who makes bold statements with the likes of adidas and Converse?

Or maybe you dig the way Fabolous keeps it clean with names like Reebok and Louis Vuitton?

I personally have to go with Kanye. He’s made a significant mark in this category, with two hit sneaker collaborations last year—the Air Yeezy with Nike and Don’s with Louis Vuitton—and he switches it up with clean designer kicks from the like of Maison Martin Margiela.
