Keep Louisville Local: Street cred

MATT KUBANCIK ISN’T AFRAID TO TAKE CHANCES

Street Moda • www.streetmoda.com

While most teenagers work mall jobs and beg for an allowance to buy the finer gadgets in life, Matt Kubancik took another route. As a teen working retail at American Eagle, he bought the entire clearance rack once and resold the clothes on eBay, making an incredible profit, which planted the DIY seeds in the young entrepreneur. Now he owns Street Moda Footwear Group (www.streetmoda.com), which was named one of the year’s top-five fastest-growing independent and privately owned companies in Louisville by Business First. Kubancik, 24, operates the online business out of a warehouse in the East End and employs more than 30 people.

Street Moda sells popular, urban and hard-to-find brands of shoes, clothing and accessories at a discount. Think Ed Hardy, Rocket Dog and Lucchese boots. Kubancik started it in 2005 at the age of 18. The cutting-edge retail site offers authentic brand names at 50-80-percent off.

Although his online business has been successful for years, he tried his hand at retail last year, opening a storefront in the Highlands. While it didn’t last, the lessons he learned will. “It humbled me,” he says. “I was a little arrogant, honestly. I thought I could do anything due to the amount of success I had. It made me realize I’m lucky to be doing what I’m doing and have the success I’ve had.”

Where did you come up with the idea for starting Street Moda?

The idea came to me during my years of selling goods online. I was passionate about fashion and street clothing, so I combined my two interests together and started to build a company.

What were you doing before you decided to take the leap?

I started a few online ventures when I was 13, so I was very much always an entrepreneur, but I worked part-time at different fast-food jobs and at Bonefish Grill to help pay the bills.

What was your backup plan?

I really didn’t have a backup plan. I’m an entrepreneur, and I rolled the dice. I’ve been lucky so far.

What do you like the best about owning your own business?

The pressure. I love taking risks, doing big things and taking chances.

And the least?

Expect to be available 24/7. Even if you have good people running your business, which I do, you need to be available 24/7.

What does Louisville need more of?

Non-chain Italian restaurants like the ones located on the East Coast — and iconic retailers.

Five Artists and Brands Who Should Collaborate

Submitted by imglobalnow on November 10, 2010 – 10:06 am

Artists are so stylish and fashion savvy these days, it comes to no surprise that clothing brands are teaming up with musicians to create limited edition collections. From Wu Tang to Bun B and even new artist Vado, rappers seem to serve as inspirations for designers. With the holiday season getting closer by the day, now is the perfect time for fashion brands to look to collab with artists for those rare and limited capsule collections. Here are five pairs of artists and brands who should come together to create great product.

1. Young Money Entertainment x Rocksmith Clothing

Rocksmith recently dropped their capsule collection inspired by Staten Island rap group, the Wu Tang Clan. I can definitely see Rocksmith doing Young Money’s gear justice, with pieces based on different members of the crew. From Weezy-inspired hoodies, to Drake-themed hats and Nicki Minaj tees, Rocksmith has what it takes to help Young Money conquer the clothing game, just like they’ve done with music.

2. Snoop Dogg x LRG

LRG is known for their “green”-inspired clothing (Hustle Trees shirt, smoking jacket) and with rapper Snoop Dogg being an advocate for the sticky-icky, their capsule collection would go up in smoke–literally. If Snoop got together with the Lifted Research Group, there’d be no limit to how high this collabo can get.

3. Flavor Flav x Flud Watches

Flavor Flav, known for showing off the time in a non-traditional way, has the craziest clock collection in the game. Pairing up with Flud Watches would be a great move for both Flav and Flud. Flud Watches are unconventional timepieces—a DJ turntable and a radio have served as inspirations for past Flud Watch collections. Can you imagine what kind of craziness this duo could make?

4. Rick Ross x Coogi

Rick Ross is the modern day Notorious B.I.G. Now before you get angry and send me hate mail, I’m not referring to his music—I’m speaking of his swagger and image. Ross is doing exactly what Biggie did, embracing his obesity, thus making it cool to be big. Can you imagine what a Rick’s capsule collection would look like?

5. Jay-Z x Reebok

While this collabo already happened, we need it to happen again. Hov definitely changed the game as one of the first rap artists to partner with a major sneaker company for their own signature sneaker. Jay-Z opened the door for more fashion opportunities with rappers. Although many emcees have released sneakers, none have sold as well or were as stylish as the S. Carter shoe. Birdman‘s Lugz, The Game‘s Hurricane sneaker, and even 50 Cent‘s G-Unit sneaker don’t hold water to Hov’s Reebok footwear

Top Five Hip Hop Books To Give This Holiday Season!

Lil Wayne might not like to read so much, but hip hop fans, if you and your loved ones love to read… jump for joy this holiday season because your favorite rappers and hip hop stars came up with quality reads.  Well, some are more into visuals, but hey, the books will be a nice display on your coffee table once you’re done reading!  Here are the SoJones top five Hip Hop Books to give out.

1.  The 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene

Want to know what Fifty Cent did to achieve his success and be where he is today?  Check his collaboration with best-selling author, Robert Greene who succeeded with his previous book: “The 48 Laws of Power”. 50 and Greene offers the bible for success in life and work by living with one simple principle: fear nothing.

2. Kanye West “Glow In The Dark”

When this book was first released, we were awed by the spectacular visuals presented by photographer Nabil Elderkin. Now, a year later, the book’s photographic ride through Kanye’s life still gives us chills. Perfect for the artsy individuals, and also, Kanye die hard fans.

3. Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All – Russell Simmons and Chris Morrow

The hip hop CEO tells it like it is. Russell Simmons along with Chris Morrow will tell you unforgettable true stories from his own road to riches, delving into the principles and practices that have kept him energized and focused. So if you’re thinking to get rich and not losing your spirituality, this book is for you. The book will be available in January 2011, but is available for pre-order starting today.

4. Decoded – Jay-Z

One of the most anticipated books in the hip hop world, composed of a controversial rapper’s pool of lyrics, this memoir takes its readers to the world of Jay-Z. Find out what the meanings are behind Jay-Z’s well-written lyrics and appreciate why they became an art form. As Jay-Z said himself: “When you’re famous and say you’re writing a book, people assume that it’s an autobiography–I was born here, raised there, suffered this, loved that, lost it all, got it back, the end. But that’s not what this is. I’ve never been a linear thinker, which is something you can see in my rhymes. They follow the jumpy logic of poetry and emotion, not the straight line of careful prose. My book is like that, too.”

5. Rihanna – Simon Henwood

Calling out to Rihanna’s die hard fans, here’s the book launched a few days ago at Barnes and Noble. Composed by Simon Henwood with a preface by Alexandre Vauthier, this book is the official visual chronicle of Rihanna’s solo tour. See why she’s a fashion icon and listen to her good music as every hard cover edition of the book comes with a CD with a song from her latest “Rated R” album.
